Ekiti Diocesan Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria Strongly Condemns Horrific Attack on Ekiti Traditional Rulers and Urges Government Action

PRESS RELEASE

The Ekiti Diocesan Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria is deeply saddened and outraged by the dastardly act committed against two traditional rulers in Ekiti, the Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti in Ajoni, Ikole Local Government Area. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and communities affected by this heinous act.

Eyewitnesses have reported that armed Fulani herdsmen attacked the traditional rulers as they were returning from a meeting. The assailants mercilessly fired bullets at them, resulting in the tragic loss of lives. We are relieved to hear that the Alara of Ara in Ikole Local Government managed to escape from their clutches.

This incident, which occurred between Oke-Ako and Ipao Ekiti, is a stark reminder of the escalating insecurity in our society. The safety and well-being of our citizens, particularly our traditional rulers who play a vital role in our communities, should be of utmost importance. It is disheartening to witness such acts of violence perpetuated against individuals who have dedicated their lives to serving their people.

The Laity Council strongly condemns this despicable act and calls upon the government at all levels to take immediate and decisive action. We urge the relevant authorities to spare no effort in apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring that they face the full force of the law. Justice must be served to bring solace to the grieving families and restore faith in our justice system.

Furthermore, we implore the government to implement comprehensive measures to address the prevailing security challenges in Ekiti State and across the nation. We demand increased security presence, intelligence gathering, and proactive strategies to prevent such incidents from recurring. It is the responsibility of the government to protect the lives and properties of its citizens.

The Laity Council stands in solidarity with the people of Ekiti State during this difficult time. We urge the community to remain calm and united while supporting the ongoing efforts of the security agencies. We also call upon individuals and organizations to collaborate with the authorities by providing any relevant information that could aid in the investigation of this crime.

We believe that by working together, we can create a safer and more secure environment for all. Let us remember the lives lost in this tragic incident and honor their memory by demanding justice and positive change.
