Ekiti Medical Women Association calls for a change in the narratives of GBV.

The Medical Women's Association of Nigeria (MWAN) Ekiti State Chapter has reiterated her commitment to continuous war against Gender - Based Violence.

This was contained in a press release made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti to commemorate her annual campaign for  year 2022 16 days of activism against Gender - Based violence (GBV).

According to the release, the 16 days activism against Gender - Based Violence (GBV) 2022 is themed "Unite! Activism to end violence against women and girls" is aimed at encouraging the female folks to keep doing the little they can in their sphere of influence to combat Gender - Based Violence.

Dr Esther Akinsoto, the president of the Medical Women's Association highlighted some different types of Gender - Based Violence (GBV), which are physical violence, sexual violence, psychological violence, female genital mutilation, sexual harassment amongst others.


She further stressed the causes of Gender - Based Violence which included but not limited to cultural practices, existing laws of the land, economic empowerment and politics.

Akinsoto echoed that more than 50 percent of women and girls who are survivors or victims of GBV are at risk of having psychological problems such as low self esteem, depression, persistent negative thoughts all of which can result to death.

She called on the press and media practitioners to intensify efforts in creating awareness and prevention of GBV as she said it is better prevented than managed.
